The Journey to Self-Discovery: 10 Steps to Unlock Your Inner Power (Part 9)

Part 9: Communication – The Bridge to Connection

Why Communication is the Foundation of Relationships

Have you ever felt misunderstood, like no matter what you say, the other person just doesn’t “get” you? Or perhaps you’ve been on the other side, unsure how to interpret someone’s words or actions. Communication is more than just speaking—it’s the art of connecting, understanding, and being understood.

Without clear and meaningful communication, even the strongest relationships can falter. Whether it’s with a partner, friend, colleague, or family member, how we communicate shapes the foundation of our connections.

Listening: The Heart of Communication

One of the most powerful yet underused skills in communication is listening. And I don’t just mean hearing someone’s words—I mean truly listening. Listening without judgment, without forming a response in your head while they’re still speaking, and without letting distractions pull you away.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I truly listen when others speak, or am I quick to interject my own thoughts?

  • How often do I ask questions to ensure I’ve understood someone’s perspective?

Active listening doesn’t just make others feel valued—it also deepens your understanding and strengthens your relationships.

Clarity: Say What You Mean

While listening is vital, so is expressing yourself clearly. How often do we assume that others can read between the lines or instinctively know what we mean? Clarity in communication requires intention—being thoughtful about the words we choose and ensuring our message is clear.

Here’s a simple practice:

  • Before you speak, ask yourself, “What is the main point I want to get across?”

  • Check in with the other person to confirm they understood what you meant.

Tailoring Your Approach: The Power of Adaptability

Not all conversations are the same, and neither are all people. Sometimes, we need to adjust our communication style depending on the person or situation.

For example, there was a time when a woman came to me and said she loved her husband, even though he was threatening her with a gun. This was not a situation where I could simply validate her feelings. It required careful, deliberate communication to guide her toward safety and help her see the reality of her situation.

Adaptability means meeting people where they are and using the right words, tone, and approach for the moment.

Practical Steps for Better Communication

  1. Ask Questions: When someone says something that seems unclear, ask for clarification. Don’t assume you know what they mean.

  2. Express Your Intentions: Start conversations by sharing what you hope to achieve, whether it’s resolving a conflict, sharing an idea, or simply connecting.

  3. Meditate on Difficult Relationships: Spend time visualizing a person you struggle to communicate with. Imagine the conversation flowing freely and both of you understanding each other better.

Meditation: Opening the Channels of Communication

Sit in a quiet space and close your eyes. Visualize someone you’ve had difficulty communicating with. Picture a clear, open channel between you, free of obstacles. See the conversation unfolding with mutual understanding and respect. Feel yourself speaking with confidence and clarity while truly listening to their response.

The Key to Connection

At its core, communication is about connection. When we listen, speak clearly, and adapt to the needs of others, we build bridges of understanding and trust. And while it’s not always easy, the effort we put into improving our communication skills can transform not only our relationships but also our own sense of peace and confidence.
