The Journey to Self-Discovery: 10 Steps to Unlock Your Inner Power (Part 5)
Part 5: Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls – The Power of Restriction
Why Restriction is Key to Spiritual Growth
As human beings, we often shy away from restriction. We associate it with limitations, deprivation, or discomfort. But on the spiritual path, restriction is not about denying yourself—it’s about creating boundaries that foster growth and empowerment.
Restriction helps us give and receive in a balanced way. It ensures that our giving doesn’t overwhelm the receiver, and that our receiving doesn’t leave us dependent or unfulfilled. In this lesson, we’ll explore how restriction brings clarity, strength, and lasting fulfillment.
What Happens When We Give Without Boundaries?
Have you ever given so much to someone that they became dependent on you? Maybe you wanted to help them grow, but instead, they stayed stuck, waiting for your next handout. I’ve been there, and it’s a hard truth to face: sometimes, over-giving can do more harm than good.
When we give without restriction, we rob others of the opportunity to rise to their potential. True giving involves a balance—it’s about empowering the receiver to stand on their own while still offering your support.
Earning vs. Receiving
There’s a unique power in earning something rather than simply being given it. Think about a puzzle: would you rather have someone solve it for you, or would you prefer the satisfaction of solving it yourself?
This principle applies to every aspect of life. When we allow others to earn what they need, we give them the gift of growth and self-respect. Similarly, when we focus on earning rather than just receiving, we cultivate our own strength and independence.
Ask yourself:
What is truly important to you—earning or receiving?
How can you help yourself earn rather than simply receive?
What strengths have you developed through your own effort, rather than through handouts?
Balancing Body and Soul
Our time on this earth is limited. While our souls are eternal, our bodies are finite, which means every moment matters. Restriction allows us to focus on what truly counts, helping us avoid wasting energy on actions or relationships that don’t serve our higher purpose.
This is especially important when it comes to giving. By learning to restrict ourselves, we ensure that our gifts are meaningful and lasting.
Practical Exercise: The Art of Earning
Take a moment to reflect on something you’ve recently received, whether it’s an opportunity, a gift, or a compliment.
Did you earn it, or was it freely given?
How did it make you feel?
Now, think of one way you can focus on earning something meaningful this week. Maybe it’s working toward a goal, learning a new skill, or building a relationship through effort and authenticity.
Meditation: Strength Through Restriction
Visualize yourself standing in front of a door. Behind the door is everything you desire. But instead of opening it right away, take a deep breath and pause. Imagine the strength you’re building by waiting, preparing, and earning your way to the other side. Feel the power of restriction as a tool for growth, not limitation.
The Power of Boundaries
Restriction isn’t about saying no—it’s about saying yes to the things that matter most. It’s about giving in a way that empowers others, receiving in a way that fosters gratitude, and living in a way that honors your highest self.
